Headphones while riding: what’s allowed?

28 September 2026 · 3 min read · VOXPEERS team

Music, navigation prompts, chatting with the group: these days many people ride with headphones. But is that actually allowed? The short answer: in Switzerland, Germany and Austria, yes – with one important condition.

The basic rule: you must be able to hear the traffic

In none of the three countries are headphones on a bicycle, e-bike or motorbike explicitly banned. Everywhere, however, the same principle applies: you must still be able to hear bells, horns and sirens. So what matters is not whether you wear headphones, but how loud they are and how well you can still hear your surroundings.

Switzerland

Under Art. 3 of the Swiss Traffic Rules Ordinance (VRV), your attention must not be impaired by music or communication devices. There is no fine just for wearing headphones. In the event of an accident, however, a court may conclude that you were distracted – with consequences for contributory negligence and insurance payouts.

Germany

§ 23 of the German Road Traffic Regulations (StVO) requires that your vision and hearing are not impaired. Music through headphones is allowed as long as you can still hear warning signals. If it is too loud, you face a fine of 15 euros, more if you endanger others.

Austria

In Austria, too, headphones are not generally banned on bicycles and e-bikes. However, anyone who can no longer adequately perceive their surroundings because of their headphones is considered unfit to ride. On a motorbike, phoning is only allowed with a hands-free system; otherwise it costs 100 euros or more. A hands-free system is explicitly allowed to work with headphones or a helmet headset.

One earbud or two?

Legally, it makes no difference in any of the three countries. For safety, though, keeping one ear free is still a good idea. Even better are headphones that leave your ears open: bone-conduction headphones or models with a transparency mode. That way you hear your group and the traffic at the same time. Active noise cancellation (ANC) is best switched off while riding.

Take care on tours abroad

Other countries are stricter. In France, headphones and earbuds are banned while riding; the fine is 135 euros. Spain is also strict. Bluetooth systems permanently built into the helmet are allowed there for motorcyclists. For a motorbike tour to the Mediterranean, that means: helmet headset yes, earbuds no. Check the rules of your destination country before every tour abroad.

Our tips for the road

How VOXPEERS helps: the app is designed so that you don’t have to tap anything while riding. The intercom works without pressing a button, and you control key functions by voice command. That keeps your hands on the handlebars and your eyes on the road.
